When you see the word scripture, what do you think? What kinds of feelings does it bring up inside of you? Boring? Blah? Not enough time? Pointless? Confusing? Overhwleming? To me, scripture and the word of God sets my soul on fire. It offers me comfort, strength, hope, it offers me a chance to talk to God and for him to reveal Himself to me. It offers me a chance to claim His promises to me in prayer and worship, it offers me a chance to understand just how deeply He loves everyone. I get a glimpse of His grace and mercy, of His sovereignty.
Ephesians is one of my most beloved and treasured books in the Bible. And one of my favorite chapters is 6 (the armor of God). Ephesians 6:17 talks about how our sword is the word of God.
Knowing the word of God sets our standards, helps us live in truth, and measure whether things are true or false, of this world or of eternity. Knowing the word of God helps off fight off the Devil’s schemes…and trust me, he is coming after you.
You should memorize scripture for those times of need. I am an anxious worrier. I can worry about nothing. Since I started memorizing scripture my worrying has stopped, maybe not 100% but when I find myself worrying I find myself repeating scripture and praying. Plus, a Pastor once said that worrying is a form of atheism…AHHH!
Memorizing scripture helps you understand God’s love for you. You can’t mess up too big for God. The same God that created the universe in six days and raised to life from death…yes, no mess you make is TOO big for him not to cleanup.
Memorizing scripture gives you answers. God commands us to have answers about our faith for others. I get asked by co-workers about my faith all the time. God gives me answers to give them and most of the answers are from scripture I have already memorized.
As a parent, one of my biggest commands is to bring my children to Christ. Scripture helps answer their questions, but also they get to see God’s love through me.
When your world comes crumbling down having scripture memorized can bring you hope.
God doesn’t tell us that when we belong to Him that our lives are going to be easy. In fact, He says that we WILL have troubles. Knowing God’s word and promises can help build our faith when we are being tested or going through troubles.
Lastly, knowing and memorizing God’s words help us give all glory to Him when things are going right.
Next week I will share how I memorize scripture, as well as some of my favorite verses that have helped me out tremendously. Do you memorize scripture? Why do you memorize it? Has it helped you out?
