Not Your Lunch Lady’s Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joe night is always a night of cheering at our house. My kids and husband love them, and I love them because I can sneak a lot of veggies into this  mix and my kids (or husband) have no idea. This recipe is quick and yummy, perfect for a busy week night.

You will need:


1-1.5 pounds of ground beef
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup BBQ sauce
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 tablespoon mustard (yellow)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch of salt
1 cup diced celery
1 cup grated carrots
Hamburger buns

Begin by dicing the celery stalks and grating carrots (this hides the carrots a little better). Then to a hot pan, add hamburger, celery, and carrots. Brown the meat.


When the meat is browned, drain. Add the  meat and veggies back to the pan and add the rest of the ingredients, ketchup, BBQ sauce, pepper, mustard, and salt. Mix together.



Serve on toasted hamburger buns.


Quick, easy, and delicious. What I like about this meal is, it allows me to control my ingredients that I am feeding my family. We love sloppy joes.

  1. Yum!! I love sloppy joes but haven’t even thought to make them for the kids, in fact it’s been years since I’ve had them! Love the idea of sneaking veggies in!
