On Our Way to Sunriver Oregon (Day 1 and 2)

Hello and good morning (or afternoon, or evening…or whenever you are reading this post). Last week my family took a big road trip to Sunriver Oregon. Brandon and I decided to leave two days early and break our trip up a little by stopping at some of the fun places that Oregon has to offer.

Day one was spent in the car and at Denny’s for dinner, pool at the hotel and Big Brother before bed.

Day two started bright and early. We grabbed a bite to eat and then hit the road. Guy ate an apple and stared out the window looking for all the farm equipment. Harvest is starting in areas and so he loved looking at all the tractors, combines, bank-out wagons, and any other piece of equipment.

Our first stop of the day was Bonneville Dam. This is such a fun place to stop and stretch your legs. We took in the locks and fish ladders.

We also went down into the fish ladders and you can see all the fish coming across. It is really neat.

Next we walked around their fish pnds. We saw sturgeon and rainbow trout.

This is Herman the sturgeon. Herman is over 60 years old, over 10 feet long and weighs 425 pounds. He is quite the fish!

Next we headed over to the trout ponds and fed them.

And then both kids were SUPER excited to see a Big Foot statue (although Maddi was too cool to stand in front of it) because they are obsessed with the show “Big Foot Hunters” and are believers (face palm!).

Our next stop was a close stop down the road…

We took the small hike up to the bridge to get even closer.

Multnomah was beautiful. Brandon and I had both been when we were kids, and thought it would be the perfect place for a picnic but when we got back to the car for lunch there were no picnic tables so we had our lunch on the hood of the car. The stuff memories are made of!

Our next stop was the Portland Zoo…

Here are the kiddos in a to-scale Eagle nest.

We stopped for homemade marionberry ice cream!

And at the end of the day the kiddos picked out stuffed animals. Maddi picked out an owl named “Fluffy” and Guy picked out his favorite animal from the zoo, a cheetah which he named “Cheetey”.

We ended our day with this beautiful close-up drive around the base of Mt. Hood.

It was a great day that left our legs tired but our hearts full! I will be back tomorrow with our re-cap of the rest of the trip.

  1. Yay for these re-caps. The kids look so happy to be on vacay and I bet mama and daddy were too. What a beautiful area to explore!!

  2. Oh my goodness Oregon is beautiful! That waterfall is just breathtaking. I’m laughing so hard that your kids believe in Bigfoot and I’ve never heard of that show. I need to look it up. The Eagle’s Nest is crazy, I never knew they were that big. Can’t wait to see the rest of your pictures

    1. I didn’t know they were that big of nests either. It was crazy to see. I laugh so hard about the Bigfoot thing too…and Brandon and I tell them he is not real and they do not believe it!

  3. Looks like you guys had fun. I guess I never realized how big eagles nests were. That’s huge! And that waterfall with the bridge is gorgeous!

  4. What a fun trip so far! we love a good road trip, with fun stops! I love all your mountain views! Beautiful water falls too.

    1. Us too Susan! It worked out so well to break the trip up like that. But when it is time to come home, it is time to come home and we usually just head straight home 🙂 Hahahaha!

  5. Oh, wow! Those falls are just so beautiful. I can’t even imagine how much more beautiful they would be in person! Looks like a great start to your trip.
