Kids Summer Reading Club: Because of Winn-Dixie

Hello friends. Today is one of my favorite days of the month, it is our Kids Summer Reading Club. The book this month was Because of Winn-Dixie.

Maddi loved this book. Guy has heard the story before (his teacher had read it to him at school this year) and he loved listening to Maddi read. I even enjoyed listening to the story. If you are looking for a good summer read for your kids, this is a good one.

What made you laugh in this book? Why?

The part that made me laugh was when Opal found Winn-Dixie and the dog was running around the store named Winn-Dixie.

Why do you think it was easier for Opal to open up to Winn-Dixie?

Because the dog listened to her and she helped Winn-Dixie look better, not like a stray dog.

Do you think you would like to eat a Littmus Lozenge? Why or why not?

No, it made them talk about sad things.

What does the title Because of Winn-Dixie mean to you?

It doesn’t really mean anything to me. Is Winn-Dixie a real place?

Why do you think Opal wanted to know ten things about her mother?

Because she didn’t know her mom and couldn’t remember her mom. My favorite fact was that she had red hair.

What decisions does Opal make in the story that end up changing her life?

She makes friends with all sorts of people she wouldn’t before. When she goes into the library, she makes friends with an old lady. She starts talking to people and being friends with people.

We would love it if you would join us next month. We are going to be reading a new-to-me author and book. My animal-loving girl is sure to enjoy it!

This reading club has been a great way to encourage reading and also help Maddi reach her reading goals for the summer. It has also helped Guy who loved listening to the “Because of Winn-Dixie”. I hope you will all link-up on July 18th!

    1. I love it too Britt. I read it for the first time ever this winter to my kindergarten class and they loved it. It is one of my favorite read alouds 🙂 It ranks right up there with “Ramona the Pest” and “Charlotte’s Web” 🙂 I am really excited to watch the movie with Maddi and Guy.

    1. I was wondering if it was a real food store. I love the book. It was fun listening to Maddi read it to Guy. Guy had heard it this year in school and he was so excited to hear it again and then hearing them both talk about the story was music to my ears! 🙂
